RUSTEBERG

The imposing hill of Rusteberg was used as a fortress long before the castle was built around 1100 AD.

The castle of Rusteberg is situated close to the village of Marth, near Uder and Heiligenstadt in Eichsfeld, Thüringen. See map. Rusteberg and Heiligenstadt were ruled by the bishop of Mainz. The only walls left of the castle today are the ruins of the chapel. The stones were used in the 18th century to build the present Rusteberg clinic in Marth.

Left: In the chapel wall there is a stone picturing the Holy Martin of Tours, sitting on his horse and cutting his cloak in half to share it with a beggar. This is also the coat of arms of the town of Heiligenstadt
